The Amalfi Coast is one of those places that never gets old—believe me, I should know.
I live between Naples and the Amalfi Coast, and my husband Aldo and I spend as much time as we can road tripping along those winding coastal roads on our Moto Guzzi. It’s our favorite thing to do, all year round.
Every now and then, we treat ourselves to a romantic weekend along the coast. We book a little hotel in one of the coastal towns, leave the daily routine behind, and play tourists for a few days.
A mini Italian honeymoon, without even leaving home!
But I still remember our very first summer weekend there, and all the mistakes I made.
I packed way too much, so much so that we had to drive our car instead of riding the Moto Guzzi (huge regret!).
I brought outfits I never wore, got blisters from the wrong shoes, and still ended up sunburnt on my shoulders and neck.
That’s exactly why I’ve created this quick, practical Amalfi Coast summer packing guide—to help you avoid my mistakes and enjoy your trip in style and comfort!

What You Really Need to Pack for the Amalfi Coast in Summer
When it comes to Amalfi Coast summer packing, there’s one thing I learned the hard way: less is more… but only if you pack smart.
The coastal towns are gorgeous but full of stairs, cobblestones, and sunshine that can feel relentless.
And don’t even get me started on our humid summer weather—synthetic fabrics? Terrible idea.
Not only do they make you sweat like crazy, but they can also cause weird discoloration on your skin when it’s hot.
Here’s exactly what you need to stay cool, stylish, and comfortable.

Light, breathable fabrics
Linen, cotton, or viscose—these are your best friends for the Amalfi Coast in the summer.
Forget heavy materials or synthetic blends.
You’ll want clothes that keep you cool, dry quickly, and won’t stick to your skin.
I always pack flowy dresses, wide-leg pants, and lightweight tops.
If you’re visiting the Amalfi Coast in August, trust me, breathable fabrics are non-negotiable.

Comfortable sandals you can walk in
The pretty coastal towns are all about stairs and uneven streets, so stylish but practical shoes are key.
Only pack comfortable sandals—your feet will thank you.
Want a little local flair?
Consider buying a pair of handmade sandals in Positano. They make for a great souvenir from the Amalfi Coast and are actually useful during your trip.

Sun protection you’ll actually use
The sun here is no joke, even when you’re not at the beach.
I always wear SPF 50+ sunscreen every single day—shoulders, neck, face—otherwise, you risk painful sunburns just from sightseeing.
Don’t forget UV-blocking sunglasses and a wide-brim hat to protect yourself, especially when you’re exploring during the hottest hours.

Beach must-haves
Of course, you can’t plan your Amalfi Coast summer packing without thinking of the beach.
Besides your swimsuit and a lightweight cover-up (I love kaftans or oversized cotton shirts), pack a foldable beach tote and a beach towel with hidden pockets.
They’re great for keeping your keys or small valuables safe while you go for a swim. Many beaches have rocky sections, so water shoes can also be handy!
A light layer for the evenings
It might be hot during the day, but evenings along the coast can bring a cool breeze, especially by the water.
I always bring a lightweight cardigan or scarf—easy to throw over your shoulders for dinner or an evening stroll (or if you’re planning to visit any church in Italy!).
Keeping your Amalfi Coast summer packing list light and practical is the best way to enjoy your trip, without struggling up and down the endless stairs with a heavy suitcase.

Summer Outfits and Essential Tips to Dress Smart
If there’s one thing I’ve learned after years of living near the coast, it’s that looking good and feeling good need to go hand in hand—especially when you’re dealing with steep streets, narrow alleys, and summer heat. Planning your Amalfi Coast summer outfits the smart way can save your holiday (and your feet).

Forget the heels—seriously
I made this mistake once: I packed my favorite heels for a romantic evening out.
I ended up with painful blisters and had to limp my way back to the hotel.
Worse?
My sister-in-law wore heels in Positano, slipped on the steep, narrow streets, and completely ruined her knees.
Lesson learned—heels and the Amalfi Coast do not mix.
For both women and men, only bring comfortable shoes you’ve already broken in.
The cobblestones, endless stairs, and long walks to the tiny Amalfi Coast beaches mean new shoes will be your worst enemy.

Light, stylish outfits for day and night
Heavy fabrics?
Leave them at home.
But that doesn’t mean your suitcase should only be sporty clothes.
Many restaurants and bars along the Amalfi Coast in summer tend to dress things up a bit in the evenings.
You don’t need to go full prom-night mode, but a little effort goes a long way.
For Women:
Pack a couple of flowy maxi dresses, breathable midi skirts, and nice sandals you can actually walk in.
A lightweight cover-up or scarf is perfect for church visits or cooler evenings.
For Men:
Linen pants, a button-up shirt, or a nice t-shirt for evenings.
Dark blue is a classic and works well for dinners by the sea, especially when you want to dress up without overheating.

Keep your luggage light
Another thing to keep in mind?
Those picturesque towns—Positano, Amalfi, Ravello—are beautiful but full of steep stairs and narrow streets.
You’ll likely have to carry your luggage part of the way, and dragging heavy suitcases around in humid, sticky weather is not how you want to start your holiday.
The golden rule for packing is simple: pack light, breathable clothes that can be mixed and matched, leave the heels behind, and bring shoes that have already survived a few long walks.
