I still use a mug I bought in NYC years ago, and every time I pour my morning cappuccino, it takes me right back to that trip. 

We were strolling through Times Square, soaking up all the energy and lights, when we stumbled into a little souvenir shop.
You know the type—packed to the brim with magnets, keychains, and “I ♥ NY” everything.

We originally went in just to browse, but, of course, one thing led to another, and we walked out with a bag full of goodies.
Among them was that iconic mug, which has now become part of my daily routine. It’s a simple item, sure, but every sip reminds me of that moment.

Another cherished souvenir in our home is a tiny Statue of Liberty replica, proudly displayed on a shelf by our entryway.
It’s the first thing you see when you step inside, and for us, it’s not just a symbol of New York—it’s a reminder of a deeply emotional visit to Ellis Island.

Having half of my family living in Brooklyn made the trip to Ellis Island incredibly personal. Walking through those halls, thinking about all the people who arrived in America with hopes for a new life, was overwhelming.

But every now and then, I stumble across something so special that it makes its way into my daily life, becoming a part of my routines and memories.

NY Sabon Sea Salt Scrubs – A Spa-Worthy Treat for My Picky Skin

I’ve always been drawn to herbal products, and living in Italy has made me even more selective about what I use on my skin.
When you’re surrounded by olive trees, lavender fields, and fresh ingredients at your fingertips, you start to develop a bit of a high standard! 

That’s why I was so pleasantly surprised when I tried Sabon’s sea salt scrubs during a trip to NYC.

I came across their NYC store on a chilly afternoon, and the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the warm, inviting scent of essential oils. 

The staff invited me to try a sample scrub, and I couldn’t resist.

Over the years, these shops have become my go-to spots for finding stylish and unique home goods that add character to our house (and even a bit of envy from my sister!).

The Met Store – Art-Inspired Finds You’ll Actually Use

On one of our visits to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, I decided to check out the gift shop before we left. I wasn’t expecting much at first—just a few postcards or small knickknacks—but as soon as I stepped inside, I was hooked. 

The Met Store is filled with beautiful items inspired by the museum’s incredible collections, from jewelry to books and everything in between.

One of my favorite finds there was a tin of beautifully scented tea I bought for my mom. The tea itself was delicious, but the real charm was the elegant tin container it came in, decorated with patterns inspired by art from the museum.
It felt like a double gift—something for her to enjoy now and a keepsake she could use long after the tea was gone.

While the Met Store does have an online shop, I’ve noticed that some of the most unique items are exclusively sold at their NYC location.
If you’re visiting in person, it’s worth taking the time to browse and pick out something truly special that you won’t find anywhere else.

MoMA Design Store – Chic Home & Kitchen Decor You Can’t Resist

If The Met Store feels timeless and classic, the MoMA Design Store is all about sleek, modern vibes. Aldo and I are always drawn to its stylish home goods and accessories, which are perfect for adding a touch of New York sophistication to our space.

On one trip, we found the most charming set of coffee cups that became an instant favorite in our kitchen. They’re minimalist but with a bold, artistic flair—exactly the kind of thing you’d expect from a store connected to the Museum of Modern Art. 

My sister fell in love with them after seeing them during one of her visits to our home, so now I have strict instructions to bring her a set on our next NYC trip!

Like The Met Store, the MoMA Design Store has an online presence, but some treasures are exclusive to their NYC locations. 

NYC Bookstores Where Every Reader Finds a Treasure

As an avid reader, books have always been my favorite souvenirs, offering a tangible connection to the places I’ve explored. While I always carry my Kindle Paperwhite for convenience during travels, there’s something irreplaceable about the feel and scent of a physical book. 

Living in Italy, I cherish the opportunity to add unique volumes to my collection, especially from New York City’s distinctive bookstores.
However, due to luggage constraints, I must be selective, ensuring each chosen book holds special significance.

There are only two places in New York City where I always go hunting for books.

The Strand – Where I Lose Track of Time

One of my absolute must-visit spots in NYC is The Strand Bookstore.
Famed for its “18 miles of books“, this iconic store is a paradise for bibliophiles. 

Every time we visit, Aldo knows to give me ample time to explore its vast aisles.
He often ventures out to pursue his interests, it might take a while. He knows me all too well! 

The Strand offers a mix of new, used, and rare books, making each visit a treasure hunt. On one occasion, I stumbled upon a beautifully illustrated vintage cookbook that now graces our kitchen in Italy—a delightful reminder of our NYC adventures.

Albertine Books – Books at a unique location

Another gem I’ve discovered is Albertine Books, located on Fifth Avenue in the Upper East Side, inside a former French Embassy. 

This specialty French bookstore offers a curated selection of French and English titles, making it a haven for lovers of literature and culture. 

The store’s opulent interior, featuring a large atrium filled with white statues and gorgeous columns, adds to its unique charm. 

In a city as vibrant and diverse as New York, these kinds of bookstores offer more than just books: they provide a glimpse into the city’s soul!

The Best NYC Food & Drink Souvenirs for Foodies

New York City offers a plethora of culinary experiences that captivate the senses, and for Aldo and me, exploring these flavors has become an essential part of our visits. 

From discovering exceptional coffee to indulging in iconic bagels, each bite and sip tells a story of the city’s rich gastronomic tapestry.

We do have a few tips for those who want to experience the best NYC must-eats. Let me share, you might be surprised! 

Eataly – Not Starbucks, But So Much Better!

In Italy, particularly in Naples where I live, coffee is more than just a beverage. Neapolitan cafè is a cherished ritual.

Many Italians believe that Starbucks represents the pinnacle of American coffee culture, often mentioning it as a source of delightful drinks.
While I have nothing against Starbucks and often visit when abroad, I must say that Eataly in NYC offers a completely different experience.

On one of our trips to New York, we visited Dean & DeLuca‘s location in the Meatpacking District. Back in the day.
It was amazing and espresso felt just like home. Yet this iconic place in New York closed and we’ve been on the lookout ever since.

The very best alternative to Dean & DeLuca we’ve found is Eataly, which is an Italian brand. You’ll find authentic Italian food, a market-like atmosphere just like Dean & DeLuca or places like Citarella, imported meats and cheeses, and nice options to try Italian pizza.

Eataly is also a nice place to buy souvenirs from NYC if you can’t easily access the Italian experience where you live.

Being Italian, I must say that it’s the closest thing to our beloved Italy you can find in New York! Check it out and let me know how you like it!

New York Bagels – AKA How I Can’t Cook Them at Home

Bagels are synonymous with New York City, and experiencing an authentic one is a must for any visitor. 

In Italy, and Europe in general, we don’t have anything quite like bagels.
Their dense, chewy texture and unique flavor make them a standout delight.

During one of our stays, Aldo and I ventured to a renowned bagel shop in Brooklyn.
The variety was astounding, with options ranging from classic plain to everything bagels adorned with a mix of seeds and spices. We had no idea!

I opted for a sesame bagel with cream cheese and lox, while Aldo chose an everything bagel with a hearty schmear.
The first bite was a revelation—the crisp exterior giving way to a soft, flavorful interior.

Inspired by this experience, Zia Gianna has been trying to teach me how to make bagels at home. However, they’re definitely not as easy as I thought!
The process is intricate, and achieving that perfect texture has proven challenging. Nonetheless, it’s a fun endeavor, and each attempt brings back memories of our New York adventures.

If you want to buy some to go, let me suggest you try Best Bagel and Coffee.
They’re perfectly dense and yet chewy. We saved this place into our NYC bucket list!

New York Yankees Apparel – A Piece of NYC Sports Culture

In my town, having family in New York City often translates to a soft spot for the Yankees.
The iconic “NY” logo is more than just a team emblem—it’s a symbol of NYC itself. 

Even people who’ve never been to Yankee Stadium proudly sport the merchandise.
My dad, for instance, is a die-hard SSC Napoli soccer fan, but thanks to us, he now alternates between his Napoli gear and a Yankees cap and shirt we bought for him on one of our trips.

While he hasn’t seen the Yankees play (yet!), he wears the apparel with such pride that he could easily pass as a lifelong fan. 

Yankees merchandise makes for a fantastic gift—not only because it’s stylish and recognizable, but because it connects the wearer to the spirit of New York.

John Derian Boutiques – Gorgeous, Pricey, and So Worth It

Years ago, when Aldo and I were decorating our new house, I was obsessed with decoupage and found endless inspiration at John Derian’s boutiques. 

Known for their beautiful, handcrafted home decor, these stores are filled with unique items that exude an old-world charm with a modern twist. From decoupage plates to vintage-inspired paperweights, every piece feels like art.

While I must admit the prices can be steep, the store is worth visiting just to marvel at the craftsmanship and perhaps snag a small treasure.
On one visit, I treated myself to a lovely tray that now sits on my nightstand, holding my favorite jewelry. 

Even if you don’t buy anything, browsing John Derian’s boutiques is a lesson in design and creativity, and for me, it brought back the joy of crafting during that period of my life.

Sephora NYC – The Makeup Haul That Drove Aldo Crazy

If there’s one store that’s an absolute must-hit for me every time I’m in NYC, it’s Sephora. 

Living in Italy, the range of products available is much more limited, especially when it comes to U.S. brands.
And don’t get me started on the prices—it’s often double what I can find in the States! 

That’s why I travel light when it comes to makeup, knowing I’ll stock up in NYC.

One of my most memorable Sephora adventures was when my sister got married.
She decided to create U.S.-themed gift bags for her bridesmaids, which naturally included a long shopping list of makeup and accessories from Sephora. 

I must’ve visited half the Sephoras in the Big Apple trying to tick everything off her list.
Aldo came along for moral support but quickly regretted it.
By the third store, he joked he was starting to feel nauseous from all the perfume in the air.
I mean… I couldn’t even blame him, poor hubby!

Despite the marathon shopping spree, it was worth it.
The bridesmaids loved their gift bags, and I managed to stock up on my own essentials while I was at it.

For me, as someone who’s been obsessed with the Ghostbusters since I was a kid, some of my favorite NYC discoveries include spots that tie directly to my fandom and love for the city’s iconic charm.

New York Transit Museum Store – Quirky Gifts You Didn’t Know You Needed

As someone who loves offbeat souvenirs, the New York Transit Museum Store is a treasure trove.
Located in Brooklyn, the store celebrates the city’s iconic transit system with a mix of history and charm. 

On my first visit, I was amazed at the variety of items they had. From vintage-style subway maps to quirky mugs, tote bags, and even cufflinks shaped like subway tokens (yes, Aldo insisted on getting a pair, and they’ve become his go-to “statement” accessory for family dinners).

What I love most about this store is how it encapsulates a piece of NYC’s character.

My personal favorite purchase? A set of notebooks featuring the designs of old subway station mosaics.

Grand Slam New York – A Classic Souvenir Stop in Times Square

Grand Slam New York, located just steps from Times Square, is a one-stop shop for classic NYC souvenirs. 

This place has everything: I Love NY t-shirts, adorable keychains, and even mini yellow taxi replicas. It’s where Aldo and I stumbled upon a perfect NYC snow globe that now has pride of place on our living room shelf.

One of the best things about Grand Slam is the variety—whether you’re shopping for yourself, friends, or family, there’s something for everyone. 

I also love the nostalgia of being in a place so quintessentially “touristy”.
It takes me back to when Aldo and I first visited NYC and wandered into Grand Slam by accident, ending up with a bag full of keepsakes we hadn’t planned on buying but absolutely couldn’t resist!

Hook & Ladder 8 – Who Ya Gonna Call?

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been a massive Ghostbusters fan.
I still remember watching the movies on repeat and even writing a fan letter to Dan Aykroyd when I was 15. 

To my absolute shock, he not only replied but sent back a personalized autograph with a few kind words. It remains one of my most treasured possessions to this day.
Thank you Dan!

So, you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that Hook and Ladder 8 (FDNY Ladder Company 8) —the iconic firehouse from the Ghostbusters movies—is an actual, working firehouse in NYC.
Visiting it felt like stepping into one of my childhood dreams!

The firehouse itself is a fully functional station, so it’s important to be respectful.
If the doors are open, you can politely ask the firefighters questions, and they’re often happy to chat if they’re not busy. 

On the side of the building, there’s a small red door with a Ghostbusters sign above it. This is the entrance to a tiny “hidden” souvenir shop filled with Ghostbusters and Ladder 8 memorabilia you won’t find anywhere else.

When Aldo and I visited, the red door was closed, but I gently knocked, and luckily, one of the firefighters answered.
He was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the firehouse’s role in the movie and letting me browse the collection of unique Ghostbusters items. 

I picked up a t-shirt and a collectible patch, both of which have become staples in my ever-growing Ghostbusters collection.

If you’re a fan like me, this spot is an absolute must-visit.
Just remember to be patient and respectful—it’s a firehouse first and foremost, so they might not always have time to accommodate visitors.

Broadway Playbills – How to Get One (Even If You Didn’t See a Show!)

There’s something magical about Broadway, isn’t there?
Whenever we can, Aldo and I buy tickets to catch a show. 

It’s an experience like no other, and the Playbill that comes with your ticket is a perfect souvenir.
I treasure my Playbills—they’re like time capsules of unforgettable evenings spent soaking in the magic of live theater.

On one trip, we couldn’t snag tickets to a show, but that didn’t stop us from heading to Radio City Music Hall for some photos.
This spot is a favorite of ours, and no trip to NYC feels complete without at least one snapshot in front of its iconic marquee! 

If you’re unable to catch a Broadway show, here’s a little tip: head to a theater’s box office during the day and politely ask if they have extra Playbills.
Sometimes, they’re more than happy to hand one over, and it’s a fun, lightweight keepsake to bring home.

LEGO Statue of Liberty – The Mini NYC Icon with a Funny Family Story

LEGO lovers, this one’s for you!
NYC’s iconic LEGO stores are a must-visit, whether you’re traveling with kids or just love the creativity these tiny bricks inspire. 

One year, Aldo and I picked up a small Statue of Liberty LEGO set, which we had so much fun building together.

But one of my all-time favorite LEGO stories involves (again) my sister’s wedding.
Before flying back to Italy, Aldo and I bought a LEGO wedding set as a quirky little gift for her and her fiancé.
When we got home, we built it together, arranging the tiny bride to look like she was running away while the groom chased her with a ring.
It was hilarious, and the whole family had such a good laugh. 

Even now, years later, my sister still displays that LEGO set proudly—it’s a little reminder of how much fun we had that year!

The twinkling lights, festive markets, and iconic decorations make it a magical time to visit. 

If you’re traveling to NYC during the holiday season, picking up a Christmas ornament is almost a must.
Every time Aldo and I visit around Christmas, we make it a point to find an ornament that speaks to us.

One year, we found a beautiful, hand-painted ornament depicting the NYC skyline dusted in snow.
It was in a tiny shop tucked away near Bryant Park, and it now has a special place on our travel-themed Christmas tree at home. 

Two of my favorite stores for finding unique ornaments are Christmas in New York in Little Italy, which feels like stepping into Santa’s workshop, and House of Holiday in Ozone Park. 

Let me warn you, though: House of Holiday is a shop where I have to give myself a strict spending limit before I go in, or else I’d easily blow my budget on their stunning decorations. Their selection is massive, and it’s nearly impossible not to leave with at least one new piece for our tree!

That is also where I must confess that whenever I’m packing for NYC in winter, I make sure I have enough space to bring back Christmas ornaments back home.
Oh, Aldo made sure I confess that I often fill his suitcase to the brim, too.

For Aldo and me, New York City isn’t just another destination—it’s a home away from home. My mother’s side of the family lives in Brooklyn, and every time we visit, it feels like slipping into a cozy pair of well-worn shoes. 

There’s a familiarity in the rhythm of the streets, the smell of yummy NYC bagels and street food wafting from corner shops, and the endless chatter of languages blending together.

On my father’s side, there’s still a piece of the puzzle we’re working to find. His family once lived in Long Island, but the connections faded over the years, and we’re still searching for those roots.
Every visit to NYC holds the possibility of rediscovering a part of our history, which adds an extra layer of meaning to our trips.

But what truly makes our trips special are the stories and memories we carry back to Italy—not just for us, but for the people we love. 

Souvenirs are a way of sharing the magic of NYC with family and friends.
From my dad proudly sporting his Yankees cap in our small Neapolitan town to my sister cherishing her LEGO wedding set, these little gifts go beyond being trinkets.
They’re symbols of connection, a way of saying, “We thought of you while we were there”.

I mean, we even got my mom mermaid soaps when we attended the Coney Island Mermaid Parade on our trip to NYC in the summer!

Every time we visit, we have a long shopping list from friends and family here in Italy.
“Can you grab me a Yankee shirt?” someone asks. “I’d love a snow globe!” says another. And while we love fulfilling those requests, we also make it a point to pick out surprises. Things they didn’t ask for but will love just the same. 

It’s the joy on their faces when we hand them a Christmas ornament from the Big Apple or a Playbill from a Broadway show that makes the extra luggage weight worthwhile.

For us, souvenirs are more than just keepsakes. They’re bridges between the places we call home. They remind us of the bustling energy of Brooklyn, the search for family in Long Island, and the countless adventures we’ve shared in the city that never sleeps.
