Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

Rockefeller Center: The Heart of NYC’s Christmas Magic

Rockefeller Center is a holiday classic and one of the most popular photo spots in NYC during Christmas.

The iconic Rockefeller Christmas tree stands tall, sparkling with lights and surrounded by a lively atmosphere that feels straight out of a movie.

With a skating rink below, this spot is unbeatable for festive vibes and a must on your holiday photo list.

Insider Tips for the Perfect Rockefeller Photo

  • Timing is Everything: The best time to avoid crowds is early in the morning or late in the evening. If you can make it around sunrise, you’ll find the plaza almost empty and bathed in soft, golden light. Late nights, closer to midnight, can also be quieter but keep in mind that the lights dim after midnight.
  • Posing Tips: Try positioning yourself near the tree with the skating rink in the background for a classic shot. Another option is to stand across the street on Fifth Avenue to capture both the tree and the famous Prometheus statue in one frame. If you’re there with a partner, candid shots of you both enjoying the scene or a playful skating photo can bring out the holiday spirit beautifully.
  • Go for the Mid-Week Magic: Crowds tend to be heaviest on weekends, so if you can, plan your visit during the week. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, in particular, are quieter times that allow for easier photography and a more relaxed experience.

Rockefeller Center truly is the heart of NYC’s Christmas charm, with every angle giving you that perfect, festive photo op.

If you’re traveling solo, don’t hesitate to ask someone nearby for a quick photo. New Yorkers (and fellow visitors) are surprisingly friendly, I promise!

Fifth Avenue’s Holiday Window Displays: A Festive Wonderland

When it comes to festive instagrammable spots in NYC, few places compare to the stunning window displays along Fifth Avenue.

Stores like Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, and Bloomingdale’s go all out, creating enchanting scenes with elaborate holiday decor that make for unforgettable photos.

These windows are carefully crafted each year and provide a unique backdrop for both solo shots and couple photos, perfect for capturing that “New York at Christmas” feel.

Insider Tips for the Best Fifth Avenue Photos

  • Go Early or Late for Fewer Crowds: The best way to avoid the usual holiday crowds is to visit in the early morning (around 8 or 9 AM, or at least that is my experience) or later in the evening, close to closing time. Early mornings are particularly great because you’ll find the streets calmer and get that soft natural light. Ideal for photos.
  • Best Angles and Poses: One of my favorite tips is to stand off-center from the display so the decorations surround you but don’t overshadow your photo. Try holding a cup of hot chocolate or looking “through” the glass with a candid expression to create that cozy holiday mood. If you’re traveling with a partner, a hand-holding shot in front of a festive window captures a romantic, wintery feel.
  • Plan Your Walk: Start at 42nd Street and walk up Fifth Avenue to see displays from Bryant Park up to the edge of Central Park. It’s a fantastic route with plenty of opportunities to stop and snap memorable shots along the way. For a peaceful atmosphere, going mid-week also helps, as weekends can be packed.

Walking Fifth Avenue during the holidays feels like stepping into a winter wonderland, and each block offers a new photo opportunity.
I’m sure it’s not just me… even if we don’t have anything even remotely similar to Fifth Avenue here.
Not even the most crowded Christmas markets in Italy can compare!

You’ll thus get the best of New York’s classic holiday style here, with window displays that bring out the festive spirit like nowhere else.
Take your time, soak in the scenes, and capture your perfect holiday shots!

People ice skating at Bryant Park

Bryant Park Winter Village: A Cozy Market with a Holiday Vibe

Bryant Park’s Winter Village is a holiday favorite, especially for anyone looking for cozy, European-style Christmas vibes right in the middle of Manhattan.

The Winter Village is packed with small, festive shops, a beautiful ice skating rink, and endless stalls selling all the NYC food bucket list dishes you can think of. Perfect for that casual, cheerful holiday photo.

With a picturesque view of the city in the background, Bryant Park is one of the best photo spots in NYC at Christmas, offering everything from lively market stalls to classic winter scenery.

Insider Tips for Capturing Bryant Park’s Holiday Magic

  • Arrive Early for Fewer Skaters: The ice rink at Bryant Park opens at 8 AM, and heading there first thing in the morning lets you enjoy a quieter atmosphere and wide-open skating space. Early morning light also brings a soft, wintery glow that’s perfect for photos without the harsh shadows of midday. Later in the evening, around 10 PM, the rink quiets down as well, and the lights create a warm, festive atmosphere that adds depth to nighttime photos.
  • Ideal Spots for Photos: One popular (and very photogenic) spot is near the Christmas tree by the rink. Position yourself with the tree in the background, or try a shot from behind the fountain area for a beautiful scene that frames the rink, the tree, and the Manhattan skyline. For couples, a candid skating photo or a close-up with hot chocolate in hand will add a cozy holiday touch to your feed.
  • Visit on Weekdays for a Calmer Experience: The Winter Village is open daily, but weekdays, especially Monday through Wednesday, tend to be less crowded. You’ll have more space to explore the market stalls, and if you’re shopping for unique holiday gifts in NYC, you can browse at your own pace without getting jostled by the weekend crowd.

Bryant Park’s Winter Village has a charm that feels both intimate and bustling, with cozy lights and a friendly holiday vibe.

It’s a great spot to capture those authentic NYC holiday moments, from skating snapshots to casual market shots.
Let me also just add that it’s one of our favorite insta spots when we decide to wear matching outfits for visiting NYC. Soooo much fun!

Radio City Christmas Spectacular Show

Radio City Music Hall and Sixth Avenue Ornaments: A Classic NYC Christmas Scene

Radio City Music Hall and the nearby oversized decorations on Sixth Avenue offer some of the most classic instagrammable spots in NYC.

This area combines the iconic Radio City marquee, a grand Christmas tree, and the famous red ornaments and toy soldiers along Sixth Avenue. All within a short walk.

It’s a must-visit if you want that iconic, bustling NYC holiday shot with a twist of nostalgia.
Especially if you love music and legendary spots.
… I’m also biased, I’m usually listening to my favorite Taylor Swift New York playlist while walking around so don’t mind me!

Insider Tips for the Best Radio City and Sixth Avenue Photos

  • Visit After Dark for the Best Lights: This area truly comes alive at night, with lights illuminating the marquee and reflecting off the massive ornaments. The best time for photos is just after sunset when the sky still has a hint of blue, creating a beautiful contrast with the lights. Later in the evening, the crowds thin out, giving you a more peaceful backdrop for those iconic shots.
  • Best Angles and Poses: For a shot that screams New York aesthetics, stand across from the Radio City marquee to capture its full glow and try a mix of wide and close-up shots. The ornaments along Sixth Avenue make fun props. Try positioning yourself near them for a sense of scale, or capture a playful pose with the toy soldiers for that extra holiday charm. If you’re with a partner, a candid “walking shot” past the decorations adds a great NYC vibe to your photos. These NYC shots are also perfect for an iconic US babymoon!
  • Timing and Crowds: Midweek, especially in the early morning or around 10 PM, tends to be quieter. If you’re hoping for a shot without too many people, these off-peak hours give you more flexibility. However, weekends close to Christmas will be packed, so try to avoid them if you want to spend more time experimenting with angles and setups.

Radio City Music Hall and Sixth Avenue capture the New York holiday spirit perfectly, giving you that old-school festive ambiance with a big-city twist.

Do you want to know what I love even more?
The Radio City marquee where it shows the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular show! Don’t miss out!

Note: if you are planning to visit New York City in autumn, remember that usually the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular starts in November. It’s smart to go by then because it’s way less crowded!

Hudson Yards at Night

Hudson Yards “Shine On” Light Display: A Modern Take on Holiday Magic

Hudson Yards is a newer addition to NYC’s holiday scene, but it’s quickly become one of the most stunning photo spots in NYC.

With its “Shine On” display, Hudson Yards lights up the season with over two million lights that cover the shops, plazas, and the iconic Vessel in golden sparkle. The only other place in the US where I’ve seen that many lights is Fremont Street while exploring Las Vegas!

Insider Tips for Capturing the Hudson Yards Magic

  • Visit at Golden Hour or Late Evening: For the best lighting, aim for photos just before sunset or later in the evening. At golden hour, the last of the natural light mixes beautifully with the city lights, creating a softer look. But after dark, the entire area truly shines with a golden glow that feels magical and looks incredible on camera.
  • The Best Poses and Angles: One of my favorite tips is to capture the lights reflecting off the glass walls or mirrors around the plaza. For solo photos, try standing near a reflective surface so the lights surround you, or use a close-up angle with the Vessel in the background for a dramatic, Instagram-ready shot. For couples, head up to the upper levels of the shopping center for a beautiful angle that frames you against the entire display.
  • Beat the Crowds by Going Midweek: Hudson Yards tends to be a bit quieter than other popular spots like Rockefeller Center, but weekends can still draw plenty of visitors. For fewer crowds, try visiting on a weekday, especially Monday through Thursday evening. You’ll get more space to explore the lights and find unique angles without having to wait.
Grand Central Station at Christmas

Grand Central Terminal: A Holiday Gem with Historic Charm

Grand Central Terminal is always worth a visit, but during the holidays, it transforms into one of the most charming places you can’t miss if visiting New York City for Christmas.

The elegant Beaux-Arts architecture is beautifully accented by festive decorations and holiday lights, creating a cozy, classic backdrop that feels right out of an old New York movie.

Inside, you’ll find plenty of unique photo opportunities that capture both the magic of Christmas and the timeless charm of NYC.

Insider Tips for Getting the Best Holiday Photos at Grand Central

  • Best Time for Photos: For a quieter experience, head to Grand Central early in the morning, around 8 AM, or late in the evening, after the commuter rush has died down. The terminal is quieter on weekends, too, especially Sunday mornings when you can explore the space without large crowds.
  • Top Photo Spots and Poses: The main concourse with its celestial ceiling and holiday lights is definitely one of our favorite spots. Stand near the iconic four-faced clock for a classic photo, or take a wider shot to capture the bustling holiday energy with the lights twinkling above. If you’re here as a couple, a photo on the marble staircase with the holiday lights in the background adds a hint of romantic New York nostalgia.
  • Visit the Holiday Market: Grand Central’s Holiday Fair, held in Vanderbilt Hall, offers a cozy and festive setting, perfect for intimate shots. The market is filled with twinkling lights, artisan gifts, and seasonal decor that create a warm holiday vibe. If you’re taking photos solo, try capturing a shot browsing the stalls or with your hands wrapped around a hot drink for a candid, festive look.

Grand Central Terminal’s holiday setup is a mix of elegance and warmth that makes it a one-of-a-kind photo spot.
This location offers endless opportunities for festive photos that capture the magic of a New York Christmas. And you won’t even have to walk too much to find them all!

Washington Square Park tree at night

Washington Square Park: Festive Views with an Iconic NYC Backdrop

Washington Square Park, with its famous arch and large Christmas tree, is a particularly picturesque photo spot in NYC during the Christmas holidays.

Nestled in the heart of Greenwich Village, the park’s festive decorations blend with classic NYC charm, offering photo ops that capture both the spirit of the holidays and the city’s rich history.

Plus, with the Empire State Building often visible through the arch, you’ll get a bonus skyline backdrop for your holiday photos!
This is also one of Aldo’s favorite photo spots in New York City: we have to go every time we visit!

Insider Tips for Capturing the Perfect Washington Square Park Photos

  • Best Time to Visit: Early mornings, around 7 or 8 AM, are ideal for avoiding crowds and capturing the park’s tranquility. The tree is lit up after dusk, so if you’re looking for an evening glow, head over just as the sun is setting. This way, you’ll catch both the soft light of sunset and the magic of the tree lights coming on.
  • Top Angles and Poses: For a classic shot, position yourself in front of the tree with the Washington Square Arch framing the photo. If you’d like a more dramatic effect, align yourself so that the Empire State Building appears through the arch for a distinctly NYC shot. Solo travelers can stand close to the tree to capture its glow, while couples might enjoy a wide-angle shot that frames them together beneath the arch.
  • Seasonal Extras: During the holiday season, the park is usually decorated with additional festive touches like wreaths and garlands around the arch. For a cozy look, bring a warm scarf or hat to give your photos that holiday charm. Early mornings or weekdays are best for capturing these small, intricate decorations without the weekend crowds.
Christmas display at Dyker Heights (NYC)

Dyker Heights: A Neighborhood Decked Out for Christmas

For an unforgettable, larger-than-life Christmas display, head to Dyker Heights in Brooklyn. This residential neighborhood is known for its dazzling holiday lights and decorations, with houses extravagantly adorned in glowing displays that attract visitors from around the world.

It’s one of the most enchanting and unique photo spots in NYC during Christmas and a great spot to capture the joyful, festive spirit in a more local setting.

As I previously told you, I have family living in the area so Brooklyn has become my favorite part of New York City. Maybe it runs in our blood, who knows!
In this case, it’s even better: Dyker Heights is easy to reach and there’s always something new so our Christmas couple pictures are always different!

Insider Tips for Making the Most of Dyker Heights

  • Best Time to Go: The lights are typically turned on at dusk and stay lit until about 9 or 10 PM. If you want a quieter experience with fewer people, go on a weeknight, as weekends can get very crowded. Arriving around 4:30 or 5 PM is ideal, just before the lights come on, so you can snag some daylight photos and then capture the lights as they glow against the evening sky.
  • Where to Start: The most popular section is between 11th and 13th Avenues, from 83rd to 86th Street. This area is packed with the most elaborate decorations, including giant inflatable Santas, nutcrackers, and even animatronic reindeer! Start at 12th Avenue and walk around the blocks to take it all in—every corner offers a new and dazzling scene to photograph.
  • Best Poses and Angles: For a playful shot, stand near one of the houses’ oversized decorations, like a giant snowman or Santa. Solo travelers can capture the experience by standing in the center of the street (safely) with a background of twinkling lights, while couples can frame themselves in front of a particularly bright house for a cozy, cheerful photo. There’s always new displays, every year!
  • Getting There and Getting Around: Dyker Heights can be reached easily by subway or bus, but be prepared for a bit of walking around the neighborhood. If you’re not up for exploring on foot, consider booking a holiday lights tour that covers the neighborhood, giving you an easy, guided way to capture the magic without navigating crowds alone.
Bow Bridge in Central Park in winter

Central Park’s Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge: A Winter Wonderland

Central Park offers some of the most magical photo spots in NYC in every season. When it snows, it turns into one big, super romantic winter village. You can’t miss it!

Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge, with their gorgeous architecture and serene surroundings, are perfect places to capture the park’s holiday magic.
The combination of soft snow, bare trees, and iconic landmarks creates an atmosphere that feels like a scene from a storybook.

This is also the perfect place to go if you’re visiting on a budget.
Why?
Because you’ll find a ton of food trucks and kiosks! Central Park is perfect if you want to explore the NYC street food scene. For less!

Let me also add that Central Park is, in my opinion, gorgeous. No matter when you visit.
Yet you should also make sure you remember to go there on a New York spring trip because it’ll be unforgettable!

Insider Tips for Your Best Central Park Photos

  • Go Early to Avoid the Crowds: Early morning is ideal for photos here, especially after a fresh snowfall when the park is quiet, and the snow is undisturbed. You’ll capture the beauty of the season with few people around, allowing for more personal, immersive shots.
  • Poses and Perspectives: Try standing on Bow Bridge to capture both the bridge’s elegant curves and the skyline beyond it, or pose on the stairs at Bethesda Terrace to highlight its beautiful stonework. For a solo shot, a close-up with the lake or the bridge in the background works beautifully. Couples can capture a classic walking shot, hand in hand, for a romantic winter feel.
  • Seasonal Extras: The nearby Wollman Rink is open during the holiday season, so consider capturing a fun ice-skating shot with the park’s trees and skyline as a festive backdrop.
The Oculus at Christmas

The Oculus at the World Trade Center: Futuristic Holiday Lights

For a modern and unique Christmas photo op, head to The Oculus at the World Trade Center.
Its sleek white architecture, holiday lights, and festive decorations make it a standout location.

The high, vaulted ceilings and gleaming floors create a futuristic, yet warm holiday atmosphere, making it a refreshing change from traditional NYC holiday decor.

Confession time: I always add The Oculus to my New York itinerary because it’s a unique place no matter the season! So, yes. I’m biased!

Insider Tips for Capturing the Perfect Oculus Holiday Photos

  • Best Times for Photos: Visiting early in the morning or later in the evening, just before closing, is ideal for fewer crowds and dramatic lighting. This also gives you a chance to capture the illuminated exterior as it shines against the night sky.
  • Striking Poses and Angles: The interior of The Oculus, with its sweeping white lines, makes for dramatic photos from almost any angle. Try standing directly under the center of the dome to create a striking symmetrical shot. For couples, stand on the upper level, facing each other or looking out over the lower floor for a more intimate feel.
  • Don’t Miss the Holiday Market: During the Christmas season, a holiday market pops up around The Oculus, with twinkling lights and festive decor that add a cozy contrast to the modern space. These stalls are perfect for a candid holiday shopping photo or a warm drink shot that captures the festive spirit.
