There are a few ways to get around for a day trip from Vegas.
The first – and easier – is by car.
You can either rent a car or use your own.

If you use your own, you’ll need to factor in gas and parking.

They might impact your budget and so the best way to go would be to decide where you want to go around Las Vegas while still in the planning stage.

The second way to get around is by bus.
There are several companies that offer bus tours of Las Vegas and the surrounding area.

The third way to get around is by air. There are several companies that offer helicopter and small plane tours of Las Vegas and the surrounding area.

In this case you have to be aware of the fact that round-trip transportation from Las Vegas can actually be particularly expensive.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Red Rock Canyon features a one-way 13 mile scenic drive (about 21 km), which is absolutely gorgeous.

If you’re in love with road trips and western movies, then by all means, this is the one day trip from Las Vegas you can’t miss!

This canyon is just a short 23 minute drive from Las Vegas.
It features lots of hiking trails, wildlife and instagrammable spots.

The best time to visit Red Rock Canyon is in the spring or fall, when the temperatures are milder. However, the canyon is open year-round and there are many activities to enjoy in all seasons.

In case you don’t have a car or if you just want to relax instead of driving, there are a few interesting tour options you can check out.

Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire is an easy and very interesting road trip from Las Vegas.

The best way to get to Valley of Fire is by car.
There are a few different ways to get there, but the most direct route is to take I-15 North to US-95 North.
From there, take exit 75 for Valley of Fire Road. 

The drive takes about an hour and a half.

Located at about 45.7 miles (73,54 km) from the Las Vegas Strip, this world-renowned park features over 40,000 acres of bright red Aztec sandstone outcrops.

You’ll get to see up close petrified trees and petroglyphs, or you can go for a hike if you feel like it.

Because there are many shaded areas with restrooms and grills, planning a picnic is super easy!

This State Park is perfect to get away from the Strip. Also if you’re not big on hiking.

It is in fact possible to just drive through Valley of Fire.
There are two main entrances: one on the West, and one on the East.

In case you don’t feel like driving, you can book a tour to explore two of the best Nevada’s State Parks on a day trip from Las Vegas.

Hoover Dam

I couldn’t avoid adding the majestic Hoover Dam to our list of the best day trips from Las Vegas.

Hoover Dam is located 37.2 miles (about 60 km) from Vegas, so getting there should take you more or less 40-45 minutes.

Easy. Quick. And super interesting.

It’s the highest concrete arch dam in the US and impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume.
Visiting the Hoover Dam is one of the must-do trips from Las Vegas if you’ve never been there before!

You can take the best picture of the Hoover Dam from the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

While this bridge isn’t located at the Hoover Dam, it’s still perfect. You’ll get a complete view of the dam. At the right distance to take great pictures.

There’s the chance to book a very interesting tour from Las Vegas to the Hoover Dam. It includes hotel pickup, drop-off and also free cancellation, which is one of the things I prefer. You never know these days!

The guided tour of the dam will walk you down to the Power Plant and has a lot of added bonuses. The first one being the fact that lunch at Omelet House is included (plus water!), just like the entry fee to Hoover Dam Power Plant.

I’m sure by now you’ve seen everywhere these pictures with piles of colorful rocks in the middle of the desert.

Seven Magic Mountains is an easy and fun day trip from Las Vegas that provides a lot of great photo opportunities. That’s why it’s also a super popular instagrammable spot!

7 Magic Mountains is an art installation you can visit for free, and there’s no need to reserve in advance.

Located approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and St. Rose Parkway in Henderson (Nevada), it’s an easy 30 minutes drive from the Strip.

If you don’t have much time, I suggest you book a full day tour to visit three of the best attractions near Las Vegas. You’ll then get to visit the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and Seven Magic Mountains in just one day. And you won’t even have to drive!

Death Valley

The iconic Death Valley National Park is the closest National park to Las Vegas.

Located at about 111 miles (178 km) from downtown Las Vegas, which means that you can drive there in a couple of hours.
While you won’t have a lot of time, there are still a lot of interesting things to see.

The best insider tip I can offer is to wake up extra early in the morning. That way you’ll leave behind the Las Vegas traffic before it even starts to become a problem!

You can also leave the driving part up to someone else.
By booking a tour to the Death Valley.

Kingman – Route 66 Association of Arizona

Roadtripping on Route 66 is definitely an amazing experience.

While you can’t do that on a mere trip from Vegas, you still have the chance to visit the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona.

It’s located in Kingman, a great starting point for an Arizona road trip!

Kingman is 107 miles (172 km) from Las Vegas, so about 1:40 hours drive from the Vegas city center.

Once you’re there, you can also visit the interesting Kingman Railroad Museum and the Desert Diamond Distillery.

Locomotive Park is one of our favorite photo spots in Kingman: make sure you stop there for a bit!

Area 51

Do you fancy a great adventure away from the Las Vegas crowds?
Are you a huge X-Files fan?
Then by all means, plan a day trip to Area 51!

You can’t visit Area 51, officially. It is a highly classified military base.

I’m sure Mulder and Scully have already told us enough times about how impossible it is to go there.
However, there are a number of ways to get close to the area.

One option is to take a tour from Las Vegas.

These tours typically include a stop at the Little A’Le’Inn, a hotel and restaurant in the town of Rachel, Nevada, which is about 30 miles (48 km) from the base.

There are also a number of hiking and camping options in the area.

Driving to Area 51 from Las Vegas on a self guided trip is absolutely possible.
So if you rented a car, go for it!

There are a few different ways to get to Area 51 from Las Vegas, but the most direct route is to take US-95 North towards Tonopah.

After about 2 hours on the highway, you’ll reach the turnoff for Area 51, which is clearly marked.

From there, in the heart of rural Nevada, you’ll discover how aliens are actually between us.
Alien-themed hotels, cafes and souvenir shops are scattered here and there.

Among the must-sees in the area is the Extraterrestrial Highway sign, which is located near Crystal Springs, between S.R. 318 and S.R. 375.

You can also go find the world famous “Black Mailbox” which was also shown in an X-Files episode, with Mulder and Scully investigating its remains, near Area 51.

The Black Mailbox is located north, on S.R. 375, a lonely 98-mile (157 km) stretch of rural desert road.

Among the Joshua trees, there’s actually a copy of the Black Mailbox. The original one has been stolen, but it gets replaced every time!

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Lake Mead is a great day trip from Las Vegas for the whole family.

It is a large reservoir located in the southeastern corner of Nevada. The largest man-made lake in the United States, and it is a popular recreation spot for boating, fishing, and swimming.
There are also several hiking trails in the area.

The lake was created in 1935 by the construction of the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. It is named after President Herbert Hoover.

If you are short on time, the best option would be to plan a trip away from the Vegas area for the day.
You will visit both the Hoover Dam and the lovely Lake Mead area.

Mount Charleston

Mount Charleston is another popular day trip from Las Vegas.
It’s less than an hour away from Sin City and the drive is also super easy.

Mount Charleston is perfect for the thrill seekers and those who love the great outdoors.
You have no idea how many things there are to do in the area!

For starters, there are numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty levels.

In addition, there are several picnic areas and panoramic overlooks where you can take in the stunning views.
Make sure you bring your camera!

If you’re looking for a more adrenaline-pumping activity, there is also rock climbing and mountain biking. And in the winter months, the area turns into a gorgeous winter wonderland.
You can go skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.

Eldorado Canyon and Techatticup Mine

The Eldorado Canyon and Techatticup Mine is the oldest and most famous gold mine in Southern Nevada.
Located on State Route 165, south of Las Vegas.

The mine was established in 1858 by a group of miners from California who were searching for a new place to mine after the California Gold Rush began to dwindle.

The Eldorado Canyon and Techatticup Mine produced over $5 million worth of gold during its years of operation, making it one of the most successful mines in Nevada history!

The mine was eventually abandoned in 1942, but its ruins remain a popular tourist attraction today.

Eldorado Canyon and Techatticup Mine are both great places to visit if you’re looking for a little adventure.

At Eldorado Canyon you can hike, bike, or even go rock climbing.
For those who are feeling a little more daring, there is also the option to go whitewater rafting.

At Techatticup Mine, you can take a tour of the old gold mine, or pan for gold yourself.
Which can be a super fun family activity!

Black Canyon Water Trail

Black Canyon Water Trail is one of the cool day trips from Las Vegas that not many people know about.

It is located only about 45 minutes from Downtown Las Vegas.
The canyon is actually a portion of the Colorado River and was named as the sixteenth nationally dedicated water trail in 2014.

This 30-mile (48 km) stretch of the Colorado River starts at the base of Hoover Dam and ends at Eldorado Canyon.
Some consider it some sort of secret Vegas oasis!

You can access the water trail through a guided tour at the base of the Hoover Dam, from Willow Beach in Arizona or from Techatticup Mine in Nevada.

This paddling paradise also offers the chance to soak in hot springs, explore hidden canyons or even go for a kayak adventure!

Boulder City (NV)

Boulder City is just over 20 miles (32 km) away from Las Vegas. A great trip for those who still don’t have a clear idea of what they want to do.
The possibilities are endless!

This lovely Nevada burg is known for history, because of the interesting Hoover Dam museum, as well as the outdoor activities.

It’s a hub for those who want to visit Lake Mead, Black Canyon, Colorado River and more!

Full of small-town charm and historical heritage, Boulder is often ranked as one of the best places to live in Nevada.

Don’t be surprised to spot a few celebs when you visit: they love it there!

St. George (UT)

St. George is one of the best day trips from Las Vegas if you like road trips.
The drive from Las Vegas to St. George in southern Utah is in fact absolutely beautiful!

The views along the Virgin River Gorge Scenic Drive are stunning, whether you’re coming from Vegas or going back to Sin City.

We loved to road trip this magnificent drive at night as the glowing lights of Las Vegas were something we’d never seen before. Not from this point of view!

The city of St. George is the perfect day trip for those like me who love history. It has roots in the days of the American pioneers and it’s also surrounded by gorgeous natural sights.

In one day you can see the Red Hills Desert Garden, or the fossils at St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm.

The nature lovers can find the perfect rock climbing area at Pioneer Park, or they can set up an instagram photo session among the red rocks.

We even loved to drive the canyon road to Snow Canyon State Park.

I’m absolutely in love with western movies and that’s where they filmed a lot of famous ones, such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid!

This slot canyon is often overlooked because people prefer to visit Zion. Yet it can be the perfect complement for a day trip to St. George.

Blue Diamond (NV)

Blue Diamond is one of the hidden gems in Nevada that can be easily visited on a day trip from Vegas.

This small town offers access to outdoor recreation, including hiking and biking. It is mostly known because of Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.

Tucked away at the base of the Spring Mountain Range near Red Rock Canyon, this small community is a fab day trip from Las Vegas, even if you just have a few hours.

The drive is easy – only about 24 miles (38 km) – and packed with great views.

You can spend the day in the area if you also add Spring Mountain Ranch to your itinerary.

This state park is full of interesting things to do.
From 1860s buildings that you can explore to ranches, hiking trails, picnic sites and so much more!

Goodsprings Ghost Town

Our list of the best day trips from Vegas wouldn’t be complete without mentioning a real ghost town: Goodsprings (NV)!

Located about 45 minutes south of Vegas lies a particularly creepy town.

Goodsprings dates back to 1904.
Visitors can basically see a clear picture of how people used back then in Nevada.

If you’re big on true Wild West ghost town trips, then you can’t miss Goodsprings!

Make sure you visit the Pioneer Saloon, which has a particularly interesting story to tell.
Back in the 1940s, actress Carole Lombard was on a flight from Indiana to Los Angeles. It crashed into Mt. Potosi, about 11 miles (17 km) from Goodsprings.

Her husband, Clark Gable, waited at the Goodsprings Pioneer Saloon for days, while a search party went looking for his beloved Carole.
You can still see his cigarette burns in the Brunswick bar counter!

Goodsprings has been the set of countless movies and television shows during the years.

If you’re interested in ghost stories, you should talk to the bartender at the Pioneer Saloon. He’ll make sure to keep you entertained!

Pahrump (NV)

Pahrump is one of the most unusual places in the world where you’d expect to find good wineries.

Located in the middle of the Nevada Desert, this town is well known for its many popular attractions.

From the Spring Mountain Motor Sports Ranch to a few amazing wineries, including Sanders Family Winery and Pahrump Valley Winery.
Pahrump is the perfect day trip for the grown-ups.

It’s an hour west of Las Vegas, and an hour east of the Death Valley: even the drive is pretty pleasant!

You’ll be able to see the desert and you’ll get quite a few nice pictures for your travel album.

Mesquite (NV)

Mesquite is a lovely small town, located 80 miles (128 km) north of Las Vegas, in the Virgin River Valley.

A lot of people tend to compare Mesquite to Palm Springs (CA). The two in fact are pretty famous for the many golf courses and luxury spas.

Along the road from Las Vegas to Mesquite you’ll find Boulder City and Henderson. If you have time, it’s worth adding them to the itinerary, so you can visit more places in just one day!

Every year thousands of motor heads gather in Mesquite for the Mesquite Motor Mania, one of the biggest classic automotive show events in the US.

A day trip from Las Vegas would be perfect if you’re planning to attend. That’s the best way to avoid overpaying a hotel in town.

In case you are planning a longer day trip to Zion (keep reading for more!), Mesquite is a great stopping point to return to Sin City!

Cedar City (UT) + Dixie National Forest

Cedar City is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas.
The city is home to Southern Utah University, as well as a number of other attractions.

Some of the things you can do in Cedar City include hiking in the nearby parks, visiting the Utah Shakespeare Festival, or exploring the Pioneer Heritage Center.
There’s something for everyone in Cedar City!

Cedar City also equals Dixie National Forest, of course!
The Duck Creek Visitor Center in fact has its headquarters in Cedar City.

If you have a car, by all means head over to Hell’s Backbone. It’s a gorgeous panoramic drive that passes through Dixie National Forest, between Escalante and Boulder.
You’ll get to take tons of pictures and enjoy the view without having to hike!

Mojave National Preserve

Mojave National Preserve, located in the Eastern Mojave Desert of California, is a great day trip destination from Las Vegas.

The preserve offers an amazing range of landscapes and activities, from hiking and camping in its vast desert canyons to spotting wildlife on its high mountain peaks.

We had the chance to explore quite a few scenic drives: none disappointed.

One of our favorites is the Kelso Dunes Drive, which takes you through one of the largest sand dune fields in North America and features stunning views of the surrounding desert landscape.

If you have the chance and you love driving, by all means, make sure to add it to your day trip itinerary. It’s worth the time!

There are also several historic sites to visit, such as abandoned mines and homesteads that give a glimpse into the past.

Full disclosure: some of them were a bit creepy. Yet if you like horror movies… go for it!

Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area 

A day trip from Las Vegas to the Sloan Canyon Conservation Area can be a unique experience.

There is so much to do and see in this area, including archaeological sites, hiking trails, and breathtaking views of the surrounding desert landscape.

You can decide to take part in a guided tour of the area’s archaeological sites, or explore the ancient petroglyphs on your own.

The hiking trails provide a great opportunity to take in the rugged beauty of Sloan Canyon.
Lots of people go there for birdwatching and because it’s easy to spot the local wildlife.

Plan to stay for the day: you can have a fun picnic!

There are quite a few picnic areas at picture-perfect viewpoints.
So you’ll have lunch with a view, which is something absolutely amazing if you ask me!

Ideas for a Long Day Trip from Vegas

Cathedral Gorge State Park

Cathedral Gorge is a unique state park you can get to in about 3 hours from Las Vegas.

Contrary to popular belief, the gorge looks particularly unimpressive when you drive in.
To appreciate its beauty, you need to walk a short distance on an easy trail. That’s where you’ll fall in love with this place!

The walk to Cathedral Gorge is a loop trail of about 1 mile (1.6 km).
It leads to an astonishing natural amphitheater of red rocks.

We didn’t find it difficult, but make sure you bring lots of water for each member of your party. You’re going to need it!

The best viewpoint for scenic pictures?
Absolutely go to Miller Point Trail!

It’s a 2-mile (3.2 km) hike that starts from the Caves Area parking lot.
You can also drive to the overlook by exiting the park and driving North on US-93.

Grand Canyon National Park

Visiting the Grand Canyon in one day from Las Vegas is one of the things you can and should add to your itinerary!

Because getting there will take you more or less four hours, and you want to be able to enjoy the day out, I suggest booking a tour from Las Vegas or flying there.

One of the most adventurous Grand Canyon tours from Las Vegas includes a flight to the Northern Rim of the Grand Canyon.

You will then be invited to drive off the beaten path on an ATV or Polaris Ranger, through Whitmore Canyon and Lake Mead Recreation Area, up to the rim of the Grand Canyon.

Once there, at 3,000 feet (880 meters) above the Colorado River, you’ll get to enjoy a gorgeous view. Make sure you take lots of pictures!

The return drive includes a stop at Bar 10 Ranch, with a yummy barbecue lunch. 

As with other tours, also this one comes complete with complimentary round trip shuttle service from Las Vegas to the Boulder airplane Terminal.

The romantics out there can also book a sunset tour to Grand Canyon West Rim from Las Vegas.

You’ll get to experience an unforgettable sunset on the Hualapai Reservation and you’ll enjoy the view of the Mojave desert from a bus.

Zion National Park (UT)

Planning a day trip from Las Vegas to Zion can be a great way to explore the beauty of southern Utah.

Zion is one of the “Mighty 5” parks usually added to every Utah road trip itinerary out there. So… it’s definitely worth it!

To begin with, you should choose a mode of transport – either driving or taking an organized tour.

If you plan on driving, make sure you set off early to ensure you have plenty of time to explore the park and its stunning views.

It’s 163 miles (262 km) from Las Vegas to Zion. Consider about 3:30 hours if there isn’t too much traffic.

While you should follow I-15 North, we don’t suggest adding St. George to this day trip. There’s so much to do in Zion!
You might want to plan a separate trip to visit St. George without having to rush it!

During your trip, be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey and don’t forget your camera!

Once you arrive at Zion, you will be able to take in awe-inspiring sights such as the amazing sandstone cliffs, narrow canyons, lush vegetation and cascading waterfalls.

Bryce Canyon National Park (UT)

Bryce Canyon is a beautiful trip from Las Vegas. And definitely an unforgettable experience. Yet it’s also a long drive, about 261 miles (420 km).

So you might want to think about staying overnight and getting back to Sin City the following morning.

The park offers many activities, such as hiking and horseback riding, that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

With plenty of trails to explore, you can take in the unique landscape and its breathtaking views.

Wildlife viewing is easy and to be honest… incredible.
We’ve been lucky enough to see bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, mule deers and even eagles.

Bryce is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy some peace and quiet.
Which is why we honestly think it’d be a waste of time to rush this trip!

The park offers camping options so you can stay overnight.

You can also sleep in your car at designated rest areas or campgrounds, if you have a low budget!

Antelope Canyon (AZ)

Antelope Canyon is one of those amazing places that we always try to go to, whenever we plan an Arizona road trip.

Located in northern Arizona, this stunning natural wonder will take your breath away.

The drive will take around 5 hours, so you might want to stay the night.

Another option is to book a tour to go from Vegas to Antelope Canyon. That way you’ll leave the driving to someone else!

The first thing you should do, however, is to decide what you want to see.
Upper Antelope Canyon or Lower Antelope Canyon?
Both are stunning, but you only have time to visit one section of this amazing slot canyon.

Absolutely bring your camera, because you’ll want to take a ton of pictures.
Words can’t describe the beauty you’ll see!

Antelope Canyon is only accessible with guided tours and Navajo guides, because this is a sacred place.

Your guide will be happy to tell you everything about the legends surrounding this slot canyon.
And they’ll gladly help you to take the best pictures once inside!

Page (+ Horseshoe Bend)

Page is a small city in northern Arizona, located near the north rim of the Grand Canyon and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

From Las Vegas it’ll take you about 4:30 hours to get there, in normal conditions.
Here’s why it’d be a good idea to spend the night in Page – so you won’t have to rush it!

Horseshoe Bend is a giant meander of the Colorado River that has been naturally carved out of the rock over thousands of years.

From the overlook you can admire its beauty as well as take some beautiful photos.

The different colors in the sandstone walls are mesmerizing and it’s possible to see almost 300 degrees around the bend.
